Galvanization is a typical process of surface finish which is used to prevent corrosion and has a decorative effect. Electrolytic processes exploit the electrolytic deposition of chrome, nickel, copper on metal surfaces and plastics. The object is immersed into an electrolytic bath where happens the deposition of metal on the piece's surface. The piece has to be washed before going through the following electrolytic bath.
In the traditional process of chrome plating, anti-corrosion and anti-wear coverings containing esavalent chrome are produced.
Decorative Metal Shelving
The principal element, in all esavalent chrome solutions for plating, is the chromium trioxide (CrO3), a compound containing approximately 25% of esavalent chromium.
As an alternative to esavalent chrome plating, in the last years several processes have been developed that allow to produce deposits containing trivalent chromium.
Trivalent chromium plating consists of water solutions containing compounds with both esavalent and trivalent chromium. Trivalent chromium process has been available for more than twenty years and it is considered less toxic and more eco-friendly than esavalent chromium, also due to its lower concentration of chrome in the solution.
In the last years several processes of surface treatments containing trivalent chromium have been put right. Some of them give a deposition similar to the one produced through esavalent chrome but they are more expensive and need more controls on the conditions of the process. Moreover, they don't eliminate the environmental impact of chrome since they only reduce it. The thickness of these deposits is in general very low, so this system can't be used for heavy chrome plating and at present for functional treatments we can only find in commerce esavalent solutions.
